Bay Area Advocates Slam Social Security Number Cancellations for Thousands of Immigrants

The Trump administration's recent decision to revoke over 6,300 lawfully obtained Social Security numbers from immigrants has drawn sharp criticism from Bay Area advocates. This move, aimed at pressuring individuals without legal status to leave the U.S., effectively strips them of the ability to work legally, pushing many into the financial shadows and eroding trust in governmental institutions. Economic justice organizations warn that such actions could deter immigrant communities from participating in the formal economy, including filing taxes, due to fears of enforcement repercussions.

Jose Quiñonez, CEO of Mission Asset Fund and a 2011 San Francisco Fellow with the LeaderSpring Center, has long championed financial inclusion for underserved communities. His leadership underscores the importance of integrating immigrants into the economic fabric of society, a goal now jeopardized by these policy shifts.
