Trump’s War on Law Firms May Imperil Gun Suits
The Trace reports that President Donald Trump's recent actions against the law firm Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison have raised concerns among gun safety advocates. The firm, known for its pro bono work supporting lawsuits against firearm manufacturers, faced pressure after Trump threatened to withhold federal contracts from firms representing his adversaries. In response, Paul Weiss agreed to provide $40 million in free legal work supporting White House priorities, leading to the removal of references to its gun safety work from its website.
Robyn Thomas, former executive director of the Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence and a 2017 San Francisco Fellow with the LeaderSpring Center, expressed concern over the chilling effect this could have on legal advocacy. She noted that firms might become more cautious and less aggressive in taking on gun safety cases, at least in the short term.
