California Considers New Positive Test Score Labels
California is considering a change to its standardized test score labels, aiming to provide a more positive and encouraging description of student performance. The current labels like "Standard Not Met" would be replaced with "Below Basic," and "Standard Nearly Met" with "Basic." This change follows concerns that current terms were discouraging.
Natalie Wheatfall-Lum, the Director of Education Policy for EdTrust-West and a Class of 2024 African American Women of Color LeadStrong alum, shared her support for the proposal, emphasizing that it provides parents with a clearer, more accurate picture of their children's performance in school. However, she also highlighted the need for clear explanations of these labels to ensure parents understand the test results effectively.
